Setting up repeater bridge?

me and a buddy nextdoor are trying to link our routers to bridge each other so his internet can be bridged to my router and mine can repeat it for free wifi...now my question is to every detail which settings need to be set and be put the same so it works?... do they both have to be on 802.11b or g and such?
