Xbox Connection Help?

I have the xbox slim with built in wireless and I have a netgear wireless router. I am able to connect to live with 3/4 bars and when I play online it lags pretty bad (Mortal Kombat 9) I was thinking of getting a wireless repeater but I read that those are bad? Ethernet cables are not an option-only wireless. So will a repeater help or not?
